View Full Version : HOW-TO: filling stock mounts with "flexane" by Grifter

Filling the stock mounts is a pretty straight forward job. The biggest problem I had was figuring out what to fill them with. I did some searching and found this stuff, this is the real deal. You can get it at Grainger, it's $35 for a pound. It will fill all 3 mounts and you'll have some left over.
Devcon Flexane 94a:

The first step is masking off the mounts. This is a critical part because you don't want the flexane pouring out everyhwere or else you'll be dishing out another 35 bones. I taped it off with duct tape and it worked fine. Note: I cut off the rubber stubs on one side of the tranny mount because it made it much easier to mask off the mount. Also, which ever side you mask off will have the print of the duct tape, so if you care about how the top mount looks make sure you mask the BACK of the mount. Other than that I didn't have any trouble masking them off, just make sure to tape it up good!

Next you have to mix the Flexane. There's instructions on the box and it's pretty easy to understand. Once mixed you'll have about 20 minutes before it's begins to harden. You don't have to hurry up but be aware that you won't have all day to play with it. Once mixed it'll have the consistency of motor oil.
Pour the urethane in to the mounts:

And that's that! The full cure time is 7 days or you can heat them at 100 degrees for 24 hours(All this info is on the box) Once fully cured these suckers are stiff! I only installed the tranny mount and I can already tell a big difference in stiffness and vibration.

I ended up buying stock MM and buying the race MM inserts from www.modernperformance.com does this work just as well?

^^^ these should work better than any MM inserts, and should be pretty comparable to most aftermarket MM's :thumb:

how would this hold up to temperature differentials? Where I live I might be driving the car in below freezing weather in the winter and on the other end of the scale it could go into the 90's in the summer. Would the flexane shear from the mount, causing it to act like an "insert"?
If filling the mounts is comparable to solid motor mounts, I dont see why I should shell out 250-400 bucks for a motor mount kit when 35 dollars and a little time will do the same job.

laziness> most srt-4 owners
also, you'll need stronger mounts at VERY high power levels... but for 99% of all SRT owners, these would be fine. plus there's the whole "bling" factor of aftermarket mounts
as far as temp differences, i don't really know... i would gess that they would be ok, but i don't have to deal with it, so i don't know

Starting in about 4 weeks I'm doing a bolt-on buildup of my car that may or may not include S3. I expect to have anywhere from 300 to 400hp depending on what finances allow. Do I need to worry about new mounts? I could really use the money I save to get a better intercooler.
As far as bling, 99% of the time I could care less. I have all these tiny rock chips and scratches on my front fascia and near the front of the hood. When it came time to have some cash to get something done to my car, I had to decide: paint job.... or stage 2 with toys?

btw if anyone else is interested, there is a place that has it for slightly cheaper...

these mounts SHOULD be good for that much hp... more than that, then you may want stronger mounts

Man what the hell is that stuff awesome looking. By the way i have made up some tranny mounts almost identical as dynoworks i am testing it on my car right now. It is holding up good so far and if it stays together i will be selling them for 65 a piece.

i thought about doing that the agp dog bones im running look pretty damn easy to copy just 2 pieces of round tube connected to square tubing..with delrin inserts i have everything at my work to make them in stainless steel for durability and looks...so how are your mm constructed?

I am using 3/8 flat steel to the tranny then 2 inch .90 round tubing to the chassis with urethane bushings.

you buying or making the bushing's...i have never worked with urethane in this type of way...and so far how are they holding up and how is the vibrations?..

last question are you using tig or mig when constructing these?

one more thing...
I noticed in the pics that you put flexane in the middle of the upper mount, but didnt fill the middle of the lower mount. any particular reason? I guess the flexane in and of itself doesn't really contribute to strength?

flexane will be here tomorrow :) i'll post pics of my process as well when i do it tomorrow night :)
Just in case, i used dishsoap designed to break up grease and an old toothbrush to clean out any grease or residue that might be in the mounts before starting. I dont know if it makes a difference, but it couldn't hurt.

Update: The filled mounts are in. Wheel hop is greatly reduced!! I cant wait to get some fresh rubber on come spring. I can already tell its going to drop my 60' a tenth because I dont have to baby the throttle as much.

Wrangled up a stock upper, lower and transmission mount over the past month out of buy/sell sections. My urethane came in yesterday and the last mount I was waiting for just arrived at my store a few minutes ago. About to clear off my desk then walk to Happy Harry's and get some duct tape.
Can't... stop... MODIFYING!! :ftard:

01-12-2010, 02:12 PM
nice!
i can tell you that versus the stock mounts, and even having the prothane inserts that you will get much less wheel hop from this. You really have to work to get any wheel hop. Wheel spin though is a different story :)

Awesome, I can't wait to install them. They're sitting on my desk just begging to be installed... I need to move them someplace where I can't see them so I won't be tempted to just throw them on.
How much of a pain was it to get to the tranny mount?

my brother has access to a garage so the car can go on a lift to get to hard to reach things.
Oh, and be patient! When the instructions say it takes a week to cure to full strength, they mean it! I could tell 3-4 days in that they were much stiffer then when they first set a few hours after pouring.

Yeah, I figured as much. Unfortunately, I am not a patient person. That's why I hid them from myself on top of the walk in freezer. :thumb:

Doing them tonight. :thumb: Was too tired after work yesterday to get into it.
By the way, what's the torque spec for the mount bolts? I think I remember it being 85 ft/lbs but I'm not sure.

Got the upper and lower mounts in, torqued them to 85. Hope I was right about that, pretty sure I am.
The difference with these in as opposed to the inserts is very noticable, my car really grabs the road. Hoping to notice even more of a response once I get the transmission mount in tomorrow.
This should have been the first modification I did to the car.

I had the same thought after I got mine in. I like it more than the prothanes

The prothanes have a huge amount of wiggle to them compared to the filled mounts, I really was shocked.
How difficult was it to get to the transmission mount, by the way? And do you really have to take the left front wheel off? The how to threads say you have to take the right front wheel off to get to the lower mount, but I just turned the wheel out all the way to the right and was able to get to it just fine.

well mine were put in at the same time the cam job was done so the whole car was apart anyway. not sure what to tell you

i have access to cnc machines and lots of welding equipment... i have been wanting to make my own solid motor mounts, maybe something like boomba's design but i need some cad drawings or some kinds of measurements to go by. could anyone help me out? also do you think i should just try this instead? how strong is this stuff? is it gonna last?

This is working just fine for me. I took the car apart to inspect them and they look fine, no signs of cracking or anything.

Hey guys, glad to see some of you are liking the write up. As you can tell by the name, I did the how-to.
They've been on my car for over a year and I haven't had one problem with them. I just recently went to the track with slicks, launching at 5000 RPM and had NO wheel hop at all and they held up fine! Any more questions don't hesitate to ask.
