SACRAMENTO, Aug. 22, 2010 - The state's minimum wage workers are another step closer to getting a bump in their paychecks.
Under a deal struck Monday between Governor Schwarzenegger and legislative leaders, the minimum wage will increase $1.25 over two years. That would raise the rate to $8 per hour.
Until now, there was a stalemate between the governor and Democratic lawmakers, although both sides agreed raising the minimum raise was necessary. Democrats dropped their demands for annual increases to keep up with inflation; in exchange, Schwarzenegger agreed to two larger increases through 2010.
Schwarzenegger has vetoed two previous attempts to boost the minimum wage.
If the agreement passes the Legislature and is signed into law, California's lowest income workers should see their first raise in January.
