I wake up to check the weather and this is the headline I see...

"Executives from Ford and General Motors have discussed a possible merger or alliance, trade publication Automotive News reports in its Monday, Aug. 18, edition. The negotiations began in July after Nissan and Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn broached the possibility of an alliance among Renault, Nissan and GM, according to several sources familiar with the talks. It is not clear who launched the talks. One source says GM CEO Rick Wagoner contacted Ford Motor the day after Ghosn disclosed his plan. A second source disputes that."

Well odder things have happened. It surprised many when they co-developed the new 6-speed automatic transaxles together. I could see more of those types of "alliances" than an actual merger. Two ships drifting in rough seas and colliding can still equal two sinking ships.

I put way too much thought into that analogy.

I see what you're saying, and I hope they don't merge.

I hope they merge and the new company tanks, it'd take soooooo many shitty cars off the road.

Surprise! Ford buys Rover name from BMW (http://www.autovendors.net/news/article/1512/)

It really sounds like Ford is doing all it can to struggle to stay afloat. There is tons other news about their 'Way Forward' plan as well.. they are buying off lots of union workers to help secure the companies future.
