I got an chance to buy either crane 12's or crane 14's. at first I was going to get the 12's but then some people said the 14's are a better compromise.

I currently have the stock turbo with plans to go S3. Are the 12's the best compromise on a cam upgrade since I will have the stocker for a while before S3 goes on? Are 14's still going to be fine with the stock turbo? Do I need new springs or any other valvetrain components with 14's?

Ive seen some conflicting information in my searches so Id like to get this sorted out once and for all so I can tell this guy which one I am going to buy once and for all.

Thanks.

i don't have direct experience, but from what i've seen there aren't a lot of gains in the cams. the stock ones are very good. i've heard of using the 2.0 n/a cams too (i believe darrel cox does this) the 2.0's will be a LOT cheaper than cranes too. i haven't heard of using 12's, i know a lot use the 14;s though

My boy put 14's in his car and there really wasn't much gain. If you do cams, then you really need to do other things like adj cam gears, bore the head .20 over, and you might as well get forged pistons & rods while you have the engine cracked open.

you can figure this one out if you look at the lift and duration of the cam in question versus the stock cam....just remember when comparing the 2 cams that you want to get as much air in and much air out an the faster the process happens the better...at least that works in n/a condition but in forced induction it might be totally different...this would make a good thread once we get some finall results from consumers of both models in question...but if like they say there is little gain then why spend the coin?

Yea, lift & duration on the 14's compared to stock isn't that much

Thanks for the responses. My plan is to get gears as well, and when I do tear the engine open to install them I plan to get the head ported as well.

I'm going S3, not big turbo, so I really cant see breaking 400hp in HOM, so I doubt doing the pistons and whatnot is really worthwhile.

I saw a thread somewhere else (I think it was the naziforums) where someone with either 12's or 14's (i forget which, but I think it was 12's) and gears was able to adjust and get an additional 26hp peak on s3 and a gain throughout the band. 26hp seems a worthwhile gain with no other mods.

400+ is VERY possible with or without HOM. if you use methanol injection, you will get the same timing benefits of HOM without actually using HOM. There's a guy in AZ that ran 11.11@125 on stage 3. he has toys, but didn't actually use toys. He's basically stage3+ bolt ons+ built motor. He's right about 417hp i think, and that's with no return line, or piggyback of any kind. His compression is about the same as stock, he's running 8.0:1 pistons. I know he has a fully built head with cams, but i'm not sure what cams he's running. He's putting out about the same numbers as most of the 50 trim guys there, but his power and tq band are quite a bit wider since his turbo spools faster.

Go for the Crane 12's, Cam Gears and a dyno tune for the gears.

There is a crower cam group buy going on at the nazi board, supposedly the new Crowers are the shit.

crane 14's have changed, and now they are plenty more agressive. Make sure you check the new specs, versus the older, milder specs...

I think 14's would be a good choice...

thanks for feedback everyone. Apparently the 12's and the 14's have new specs, not just the 14's. It seems like either one would be a good choice.

I decided to go 12's because S3 might wind up getting a tad delayed, and I want to be able to enjoy performance gains both before and after S3 gets installed. Once they're installed I'll let you know what kind of gains I was able to get out of them.

I was considering the crower group buy, but it seems that they are starting the usual "sorry guys, its going to be delayed another couple of weeks" cycle, and even though they are cheaper I wanted to get my build on so when early spring comes and I can get my S3 everything else will be done and in place so all I have to do is slap the kit on.

THE STOCK CAMS ARE AWSOME AT MAKING THE BEST OF YOUR LOW END AIR VELOCITY ,BUT IF YOU WANT TOP END VOLUME "5.5-8K" YOU WILL NEED A NEW CAM PORT HEADS VALVE JOB AND A HUGE TB AND INTAKE BUT YOU WILL STUMBLE ALL OVER AT LOW R'S 1-3K NOT GOOD FOR A STICK UNLESS YOU HAVE A RACING CLUTCH AND TONS OF MONEY FOR RUBBER CAUSE YOUR GONA HAVE TO DROP IT JUST TO LEAVE THE LIGHT..WISH WE HAD VVT AND MORE LIFT .... PS THOSE CAMS WITH LONG DURATION WITH STOCK HAEDS AND INTAKE WILL PROBLY COST YOU 15-20HP LOSS YOU WILL LEAK YOU CHARGE AND MIX WITH EXAUST
GOOD LUCK LET ME KNOW HOW IT GOES
PS GO FOR THE MILDEST CAM W SPRINGS
