View Full Version : Oil leaks from turbo area.

I've been getting the smell of burning oil lately. This is the second time it happened. The first time I took it to the dealer, and they said one of the oil lines was loose on the turbo. Well it's been happening for a week or so, so when I did my O2/exhaust install, I made sure the oil lines were tight, and they were. I also tightened the clamp between the turbine/compressor. I drove for a while today and didn't get anything, but I don't think I drove long enough. It must be leaking pretty good, because it gets oil all over the bottom of the engine, from the heat shield on down to the power steering cooler.
My question is, how many different places can oil be leaking from at the turbo? Like I said, I checked the oil line bolts, the one on top, and the one on the back, both were tight.

Oil feed line, oil drain tube bolted to bottom of turbo center section, oil drain back turbo to rubber hose to block fitting, valve cover gasket, leaking oil filter, other fluid leak such as power steering, etc. Quite a few places to check but I'd look at the valve cover gasket first.

I didn't even bother to check the VC gasket. I just assumed it was coming from the turbo, because that's the only place I could see burnt oil, on the bottom heat shield. I'll have to check the valve cover too.

if Eric's(Blackbird) post doesn't help then try to wipe everything down as clean as you can get it, then observe over a couple of days where it's coming from. Alot of times you can see the trail leading from one part once cleaned.

Bottom gaskets is kind of touchy have been know to leak just by being bumped. Replace oil drain line gasket and crush washers. That should take care of ya.
Also Are leaving oil on the ground where you are parked and is it smoking alittle?

Yeah, a small amount of oil on the ground, and not a lot of smoke, but you can smell it burning. Looking up from under the car, oil coats the sway bar, and is running down the hot side pipe.

Yep replace the paper gasket on the bottom of the turbo quick!

Goddammit. If I have to pull off the exhaust/O2 housing, I'm gonna be pissed. I just put that stuff on.

I don't think you have to pull the O2 but you might need to loosen the lower heat shield and let it ride down. That and a few really long 1/4" extensions help. And clean the surfaces very good prior to install if you do end up having to change it.

x2 on cleaning the surface of the oil drian port. You will not have to touch the 02 housing to to this. Do you still have the bottom heat sheild on after the o2 housing install. If so Ive got mad props for ya lol.
